Seeing Alvvays playing live with fellow intellectual indie-rockers Real Estate at the Riverside last year was a highlight of 2014. Their friendly demeanour, tight instrumentation and knack for writing sunny, catchy, nostalgic jangle pop had already made them a one to watch, but their performance brought their self-titled debut to life. Luckily, anyone who was unfortunate to miss their set in November are being given another chance to catch the Canadians live when they play Newcastle’s Think Tank on Friday 23rd January.

Alvvays’ eponymously titled album is filled with miniature gems; Archie, Marry Me appeared on many end of year lists and was a firm favourite on headphones and dancefloors alike. Live, their songs take on a slightly rawer form, filled with blistering guitar riffs and supported beautifully by Molly Rankin’s soft, girlish vocals. Turning away from the Rankin Family’s folk roots, they place themselves firmly in the surf pop camp, completely belying their heritage in the Canadian Maritimes. It may have started to snow but Alvvays are guaranteed to melt even the most frozen of hearts.
