This month shows the Star and Shadow doing what it does best by showcasing the very best in alternative independent film. The festival begins on Thursday 12th February and will highlight the top jury selection from the 2014 Alternative Film/Video Festival. The festival, which began in Belgrade, Serbia, is at the forefront of experimental film from all over the world. It’s all part of Kino Climates, which places an emphasis on diversity, heritage and culture whilst supporting independent cinemas, like the Star and Shadow.

Some films to look forward to include the beautiful and wistful Brazil-based Time Gap by Cláudia Cárdenas & Rafael Schlichting then there’s Rettungsgriffe/ Rescue Grips by multi-talented Austrian born Nina Kreuzinger, which demonstrates some of the best unique found footage. There’s also the Slovenian Spin Off by Izvanredni Bob, a jubilant picture demonstrating creative options and initiatives of using small cameras. The rest of the cinematic works to check out include the meaningful Friedrichsfelde Ost by Milica Jovčić and Nenad Ćosić from Serbia and Croatia respectively, the honest Inversion by US-based Linda Fenstermaker and finally a short visual, experimental Croatian documentary, A.D.A.M. by Vladislav Knežević.

The Alternative Film/ Video Fest takes place at the Star and Shadow Cinema, Newcastle from Thursday 12th February.
