ARC’s Artistic Associate Umar Butt has written and devised a new show called Alex & Eliza with relatable themes at the core that makes the work with its roots in family stories one that should appeal to everyone.

The writer, actor and director has been a Stockton resident for four years, after being born in Pakistan, growing up in Glasgow and moving to Sunderland to study theatre. This play is based on Umar’s accidental discovery of an incredible hidden talent of his grandma’s and the story behind it.

These accidental discoveries of incredible stories may never be discovered without little twists of fate and Umar has developed a show over the last year during his research he reached out to Stockton’s Asian community and ARC’s Wednesday Staying Out group to gain valuable insights.

The story follows that of a girl who lived through the death and destruction of the 1947 partition between India and Pakistan, but now Zubair’s grandmother is like everyone else’s grandmother, but this is the story of just what makes her different.

Alex & Eliza is at ARC on Tuesday 19th June at 7pm and Wednesday 20th June at 2pm and 7pm.
