Reliably informed

With a fusion of styles, ironic lyrics, outrageous live performances and intentionally hilarious personae, Alabama 3 have become perhaps the epitome of the postmodern band. Combining electronic, gospel, blues and spoken word styles, they’ve forged a path all of their own and have become one of the most distinctive bands on the planet.

It’s almost a shame that most people only know them from their song Woke Up This Morning, used as the theme song to The Sopranos. While their biggest hit is a triumph of genre-bending blues-funk goodness, it’s only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the output of the band’s 20 year career. The group have released fourteen albums in total, including their most recent effort, the brilliantly titled The Wimmin From W.O.M.B.LE. Of course you can expect to pretend to be Tony Soprano making his way back to New Jersey, but the band have much more in store for the crowd on the night.

Joining the legendary ensemble on the night are local gloom-blues outfit Bernaccia. The four-piece’s mix of blues, folk and rock, as deftly demonstrated by their 3-track Cinema EP, is destined to be a perfect accompaniment to the wonky roots music of the headline act.

Alabama 3 and Bernaccia play at Newcastle’s O2 Academy on Saturday 21st March.
