“Working at the Job Centre has to be a tense job – knowing that if you get fired, you still have to come in the next day.” Adam Rowe became the darling of the Edinburgh Fringe with that belter which landed him a well-deserved Best Joke award in 2018. It rewarded eight years of graft for the comic, who started out on the circuit in 2010 as an eighteen year old with a self-confessed obsession with stand-up.

Fast forward to 2019 and Rowe’s Pinnacle tour has divided critical opinion at the Fringe. The Liverpudlian’s fearlessness in exploring trigger worthy topics such as obesity, Islamophobia and Louis CK and his unwillingness to concede ground to ‘cancel culture’ has resulted in some predictably nervous media reactions amongst the praise for his observational, laidback style.

Pinnacle might not mark the summit of Rowe’s comedic evolution but it may well showcase him as a performer on an upward trajectory who is willing to expose himself to criticism as he tries to figure out hot topics in front of a live audience. It’s this which makes Rowe’s appearance at South Shields’ Customs House on Saturday 18th January such an exciting prospect.
