As part of a year-long programme of arts activities, Creative Makings embraces ‘hands-on’ making, recycling, re-inventing, mending and thrifty activities. On Saturday 7th March the Creative Makings artists in residence will lead a series of workshops at Gateshead Central Library and Shipley Art Gallery, encouraging everyone to get involved, and an exhibition of their work will also be on display.

Those with an interest in all manner of creative practices will find much to enjoy, with workshops on everything from inflatable sculptures, sustainable sounds, quilt artwork and accordion book making, jewellery, fabric deconstruction, wearable art and much more.

In addition, a two week-long festival will also take place. Six artists are changing the meaning of crafts as we know it. Exploring unknown territory, by taking the art out of the gallery and plonking it straight into new, atypical spaces. Across various locations in Gateshead, preparations are underway for this unique crafts festival, Acts of Making, which takes place in March. This is a festival which celebrates contemporary craft and challenges the definition of craft through a variety of performances, live installations and workshops. Over the course of two weeks, Catherine Bertola will create a patterned carpet made solely of dust, Owl Project run workshops on creating your own iLog using LED’s which transform light into sound, while Keith Harrison’s Tombstone invites people to watch and participate in sculpting a series of benches made from sandstone, using skateboards and scooters. Intrigued? This is just a taster of the diversity on offer, head to the Shipley’s website over the coming weeks to explore all of the projects and learn what it really means to think outside the box.

Creative Makings workshops take place at Gateshead Central Library and Shipley Art Gallery on Saturday 7th March. The Acts of Making festival runs from Saturday 7th until Saturday 21st March at Shipley Art Gallery.
