Game of Thrones’ Jaime Lannister himself, the towering Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, stars in new Danish thriller A Second Chance, from Susanne Bier, director of In a Better World (winner, Best Foreign Language Film, 2010 Academy Awards).

Coster-Waldau is relentlessly watchable as Übermensch police detective Andreas, who lives an idyllic life with his beautiful wife and infant son in bucolic, pastoral Denmark, while elsewhere heroin-hooked couple Tristan and Sanne routinely neglect their own similarly-aged son, leaving him to sit in his own filth.

When Andreas and his sketchy partner Simon bust Tristan during a callout for a domestic dispute, the normally collected detective finds himself left reeling by the discovery of the couple’s neglected child. Driven to remove the boy from his hellish situation, Andreas attempts to have him taken into care only to see his own seemingly perfect life begin to quickly unravel, and his morality thrown into disarray.

At first glance a compare-and-contrast between right and wrong ways to lead a life, an ominous and brooding atmosphere builds around the strong cast, and A Second Chance quickly becomes something much murkier and more demanding as we see just how far a decent man can be pushed when right and wrong are blurred beyond reason.

A Second Chance starts screening at the Tyneside Cinema on Friday 27th March.
