First, a digression: if you haven’t seen Fiona Tan’s exhibition at the BALTIC, then make sure you see DEPOT in all its audio-visual glory before it moves on in November. A quick pop across the river will also help you to fully appreciate A Perfect And Absolute Blank, a symposium that examines the sea inspired by Tan’s work. The symposium looks at how the sea is often viewed as a surface object to be traversed in order to find new territories and establish trading routes, rather than as a true part of our world.

Reflecting on how the oceans have become a marker for global warming in recent years as well as a constant resource and a site of global significance. Emerging from the research interests of staff at Northumbria University across science, the arts and humanities, the event at BALTIC 39 will include performances, screenings and discussions to consider the impact of human development on 71% of the Earth’s surface. The event hopes that people will be encouraged to think with the same liquidity and fluidity of the ocean about how we treat this vital part of our ecosystem.

A Perfect and Absolute Blank comes to BALTIC 39, Newcastle on Friday 16th October.
