Most of us have probably at least heard of the Dewey Decimal System and are familiar with different forms of indexing but Tijana Stevanovic and Peter Merrington are asking us to think about what an index actually is and what it does. Their new publication A Partial Index documents a two year project undertaken by the pair in which they explored the processes of indexing, curating and public engagement within a postgraduate environment. Boring? Hardly. A Partial Index is actually a very playful and fun re-imagining of the index that will surprise and confound you in equal measure, questioning what exists at the minute and introducing new terms that could be used in a higher education environment. The duo hope that their research has avoided just becoming a dictionary that describes just one version of a subject, instead being a more malleable and innovative look at the topic.

Stevanovic and Merrington’s work will be launched at NewBridge Books in what’s set to be a very thoughtful night filled with changing concepts, boundary breaking, drinks and alphabet soup (because it’s not a celebration without some starchy letters thrown into the mix).

A Partial Index is launched at NewBridge Books, Newcastle on Tuesday 29th September.
