Web-based project A History of the North in 100 Objects sets out to show the pioneering, creative spirit and lasting legacy of the North of England’s inventors, artists, scientists and designers. The project launched last week as part of the Great Exhibition of the North which runs from Friday 22nd June until Sunday 9th September.

With nominations from staff at museums and galleries across Northern England, it all puts a spotlight on the richness in our region from the people that seek to create and better the world for those around them. Illustrating this point by looking at the creation of railways, a flourishing artistic life, the drive for social reform, and the sheer breadth and depth of world renowned inventions.

Funded by the National Lottery and developed by Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums (TWAM), these 100 objects tell just a handful of the inspiring stories that reveal the North’s ability to reinvent itself, to survive, thrive and create new futures for itself and others.

You can view these objects on A History of the North in 100 Object’s mesmerising website here.
