A new comedy night is set to be welcomed into the North East comedy scene with a focus on providing a unique platform to the ample array of female comedic talent in our midst. A Comedy Night That Passes The Bechdel Test comes to Alphabetti Theatre in Newcastle on Thursday 12th January.
Referencing the test that asks whether a work of fiction features at least two women who talk to each other about something other than a man, the show name serves up its intentions right from the off. Taking an approach to just see what they can do, the night’s founders and curators and all-round awesomely inventive comics themselves, Liberty Hodes and Lauren Stone just want to reach out to people in the hope of them discovering more female comics, and give people starting out another stage to work with.
The line-up for opening night features the acerbic Sam Potter, the warm and sometimes delightfully crude Sammy Dobson, the sharp storytelling style of Julie Grady-Thomas and the magnificently silly Nicola Mantalios-Lovett,alongside Carman Havalook who is an amazing alternative burlesque performer. Always aiming to facilitate growth, there may well be a first-timer or someone wanting to just try something new squeezed onto the bill too. There’s some great female energy in comedy, and the chance for that to be given a regular home is a quite brilliant thing, and any redressing of the gender balance is always good. This is a night that seeks to bring big laughs, and with such an incredibly impressive line-up in an ideal setting, it is sure to.
