Having a place for artists to progress their style and experiment with their craft is often an essential part of developing a creative hub. Located on Elswick Road, close to Newcastle College’s Rye Hill Campus, Big Lamp Artists Cooperative (BLAC) has been providing just that kind of space for the last five years. As well as providing a studio base to foster artistic talent, their annual BLACOUT events see the studios opening their doors for audiences to view a variety of new pieces and works in progress by their resident artists and providing a chance to support the cooperative.

The cooperative are now approaching a special milestone; they’ll be marking half a decade of BLACOUT events with a special shindig on Friday 2nd August at their West End base. As well as opening up their studio doors on the night, five guest artists will be displaying their work and there’ll also be the chance to delve into the world of vintage shop Dearest Retro as they pop up with some of their weird but wonderful wares. Throw in some choice music and maybe a few beers, and you’ve got a unique knees-up to help toast a cooperative champion of local artists.
