What do Beth Jeans Houghton, performance artist Faye Green and members of Smoove & Turrell, Rob Heron & The Teapad Orchestra and Minor Victories (plus many others) each have in common?  They’ve all served time behind the counter or in the kitchen at the wonderful Heaton Perk café. And what do all the cool kids in Heaton have in common? They all get their coffee, cake and soup of the day in the wonderful Heaton Perk café. The ‘Perk really is a unique place: café, second hand book and record shop, community hub and all-round lovely space, with an idiosyncratic menu (seriously, cheesy beans on marmite toast with some blood orange San Pellegrino has been my hangover cure of choice for years) and a generally excellent vibe.

The ‘Perk is 10 years old this month and, naturally, they don’t need much of an excuse for a party – so on Friday 8th September there’s going to be teacups of cava galore, as well as a performance on the terrace from Rob Heron & The Teapad Orchestra at 4pm. There’s also a slightly sad side to the event, since it will serve as a farewell party to the divine Billie Clark, who has left the Perk to take on a new role as venue manager for the reborn Alphabetti Theatre.

10 Years Of Heaton Perk! is at Heaton Perk, Newcastle on Friday 8th September.
