As has become customary for our birthday celebrations, we’re extremely excited to bring you another compilation album featuring the cream of the North East crop.

The album is FREE to download from our Bandcamp page; today, we focus on Drifts’ track, The Things That Matter.

Drifts – The Things That Matter

Rising from the ashes of punk-tinged rockers Rivals, Drifts were always going to be an exciting prospect.

Featuring three members of the aforementioned local favourites, Ross Millard, Dan Shannon and Simon Hubbard (also currently a member of Frankie & The Heartstrings) with the addition of Graham Thompson on drums (formerly of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaind), don’t be fooled into thinking the band are a continuation of Rivals – Drifts explore a much more intricately constructed melodic sound.

Taken from their debut EP, Blue, which was released at the end of 2015 and produced by production whizz MJ of Hookworms, The Things That Matter is perhaps closer in sound to another of vocalist Millard’s previous bands, The Futureheads, due to its infectious, ear-wormy nature. Millard’s familiar North Eastern vocals take to the fore, gliding warmly across jerky riffs reminiscent of early Bloc Party.

Throw in some lush harmonies and an infectious chorus and you have a damn fine slice of angular indie pop.
