Welcome to the ninth annual NARC. Compilation Album, curated to celebrate our birthday but also to shine a light on some of the amazing local acts we’ve come across. Head over to our Bandcamp site to download your free copy of the album featuring 17 tracks which veer from quirky alt. folk, riotous blues, aggressive rock, disco pop and plenty more besides. You’re welcome.

“Funk and soul music played by a rock band” is how keysman Mike Porter summarises Smoove & Turrell, but this track has more than a touch of Northern Soul about it. The anthemic horns, driving rhythm section and gliding organ perfectly compliment John Turrell’s sweet and crisp vocals, all wrapped up in Smoove’s unmistakable production style. John is as Geordie as they come; hard, funny, uncompromising and perfectly excessive, but with a voice straight out of Motown. If you have never dipped a toe into the world of funk and soul, this is the perfect track to bridge the gap; the tale of jealousy, pleading, devotion and romance is tumultuous to say the least and impossible not to love. Play To Win isn’t only a song, it’s a mantra, and these boys are definitely winning.
