Welcome to the ninth annual NARC. Compilation Album, curated to celebrate our birthday but also to shine a light on some of the amazing local acts we’ve come across. Head over to our Bandcamp site to download your free copy of the album featuring 17 tracks which veer from quirky alt. folk, riotous blues, aggressive rock, disco pop and plenty more besides. You’re welcome.

Sometimes local bands come to your attention in a very gradual way. Perhaps you’ll spot their names in live listings or gig posters or even in these very pages a few times before you decide you should probably give them a listen. Very occasionally, though, a band will explode into your consciousness and grab your attention like someone’s set a load of fireworks off in your living room while you’ve been idly half-watching the telly. So it was for me with Teesside duo Mouses. There’s a frenzied energy to their music which is thoroughly contagious, but underneath it lay some Songs with a capital S. Psycho is a great example of what Mouses do so brilliantly. They’ve distilled all the best bits of grunge and garage rock with infectious pop hooks, and the result is like chewing bubble gum with nails sticking out of it. The scary thing is that in spite of appearing fully formed already, Mouses are only really just getting started. Just imagine what they’ll be able to do once they really kick into their stride.
