Welcome to the ninth annual NARC. Compilation Album, curated to celebrate our birthday but also to shine a light on some of the amazing local acts we’ve come across. Head over to our Bandcamp site to download your free copy of the album featuring 17 tracks which veer from quirky alt. folk, riotous blues, aggressive rock, disco pop and plenty more besides. You’re welcome.

An amalgamation of sound and technique, Tom Hollingworth is emerging as a real master of intelligent, quirky, and at times disturbing, alt. folk. All Roads From Penrose features a combination of sweetly sung and harshly spoken vocals high in the mix, creating a curiously intimate feel. Syncopated rhythms, stabs of percussion and swathes of instrumentation wash in and out around a disorientating clamour of strings, piano and guitar, culminating in a chanted wave of sound.

The track is taken from his In The Future, We Will Spinn album, as Tom explains. “The whole album was an attempt to mirror my behaviour as a young man, broken by mental health illness around 2006. The character in the song starts in a nadir, but upon realising that these cycles are outside of their control, is freed; no longer attempting to change what they can’t, but trying to find places inside and out that they can engage with.”
