Reliably informed

As well as being the name of this very feature, Mixtape is also the name of an amazing (if I do say so myself!) weekly indie party in Middlesbrough. Every Tuesday, the swanky lit-up stage at The Keys on Linthorpe Road plays host to two live bands – as well as our awesome DJ JT and of course, 400 lovely Mixtapers. This February marks our sixth anniversary, so here’s some of the best songs, by some of the best bands, who’ve played live for us.

Mausi – Move

Massive tune that had the Mixtape masses moving like never before!

The 1975 – Chocolate

Sometimes you need a bit of luck as a promoter. Like that time we booked a little known band called The 1975. ‘Hotly tipped’ at the time of booking; playlisted on Radio 1 and in the Top 40 by the time of the gig.

Little Comets – One Night In October

Their gig for us back in 2012 is now the stuff of legend! The venue was packed to the rafters and this song in particular went down a treat. Lads, if you’re reading this: come back soon, yeah?

Avalanche Party – Obstacle

If there’s a band in the North East (or pretty much anywhere for that matter!) with a better set opener than Obstacle, then that band have the greatest opening song ever.

Thumpers – Unkinder (A Tougher Love)

The day before Thumpers played at Mixtape (for our fifth birthday), their album was released in the USA by legendary label Sub Pop. As a result, our little old club night in little old Middlesbrough, got a mention on the mighty Sub Pop’s website.

Cattle & Cane – Sold My Soul

Their debut album has to be one of the most eagerly awaited records of 2015, but back in 2010 when they were just starting out, we were lucky enough to have them play for us a couple of days after they’d played at T In The Park. It was a special, special performance from a special, special band.

Shields – White Knuckle, Tight Grip

If you’ve not heard this song, you need it in your ears. In my opinion, Shields are one of the most underrated bands around.

Collectors Club – First To Know

For Freshers Week 2013, we got Collectors Club to play a guerrilla gig on the back of a lorry outside Teesside University. It went down a treat! This February, they’re playing live for us again – but actually inside the venue this time.

DZ Deathrays – Reflective Skull

It’s not often we get crowd surfers and mosh pits in Mixtape, but when it’s time to party, DZ Deathrays party hard. Quite how one of the most incendiary live bands in the world ended up playing a free gig in Boro is beyond me, but we somehow made it happen!

Goy Boy McIlroy – Redemption Caramel

Every time Goy Boy McIlroy play Mixtape, lead singer David Saunders gets up to the kind of mischief that really does prove that our doormen are the friendliest around! As he helps himself to wine glasses, covers himself in toilet paper and wraps the mic lead around the crowd, they just let him get on with it. As it should be.

Be Quiet. Shout Loud! – (You’re Not) Sitting In Tonight

It’s impossible to think of Mixtape without thinking BQSL. Their frontman Jake Radio reps our gigs and is affectionately known as ‘Mr Mixtape’. They filmed the video for this song in The Keys and some of our regulars have even been seen cracking out the dance moves!
