MIXTAPE: Andy Turnbull | NARC. | Reliably Informed | Music and Creative Arts News for Newcastle and the North East

Reliably informed

I’m a guitar teacher, a flamenco fanatic, one half of the Monkey Junk duo and a founding member of the Monkey Junk Blues Club, which takes place every Thursday from 7.30pm at the Butterfly Cabinet on Heaton Road in Newcastle. When we’re not playing, we promote blues and roots music all over the North East.

The Healing – Glass Thoughts

This is the first song by a local artist that I was profoundly affected by and it still remains dear to me.

Gil Scott-Heron/Brian Jackson – Song for Bobby Smith

The revolution will not be televised. The revolution comes when you change your mind. This is a song about new life. I wonder what Bobby Smith is doing right now?

Devendra Banhart – My Dearest Friend

It’s hard to pick one from this man. To me he’s the most unique artist in the last 15 years. Equal to Bowie, Curtis, Dylan…you name it, he’s up there with them.

Dom P featuring Edo G – That’s Wassup

Domzilla, as he is now known, is my oldest friend and a fine producer. This is his first bumping release.

Ben Folds Five – Battle of Who Could Care Less

I saw them play this on TFI Friday (remember that?) when I was a kid and I’ve been a demented fan ever since. They managed to mix great musicianship with a tongue-in-cheek statement about our generation’s apathy towards everything.

Megadeth – Holy Wars…The Punishment Due

My jogging song. I heard it recently after a 20 year hiatus and I can’t stop listening to it – perhaps it’s a mid-life crisis. However, the riff in this tune is amazing; it pumps you full of energy.

Paco de Lucía -El Pañuelo

The tune that got me into flamenco. It’s a Bulerías, fast and glorious. It still blows my mind that people can physically play music like this.

Eric B & Rakim – Follow the Leader

I love old school hip-hop, and Rakim is the best at it – hands down. Although I’m quite a bad ass MC myself.

Bob Dylan -Boots of Spanish Leather

Hard to pick one Dylan song but I have loved this one ever since I heard it 20 years ago and it has never faded for me. In fact, it has marked my life.

Charley Patton -Hammock (Hammer) Blues

I think this is a contender for the most wonderful song ever recorded. A man on his way to prison, wishing his loved ones goodbye, pining for his freedom. And he probably played the guitar behind his head – he did it 50 years before Hendrix.

Beth Jeans Houghton – Treading Water

I hope she records this one day for her new fans. I’m an old fan. I have the demo and it’s breathtaking!

Vicente Amigo -Amor, Dulce Muerte

This man is my favourite musician. He wrote this song when he was 19. I find it hard to believe such a young man could write something so beautiful, but he did.

Holy Moly & The Crackers – Bluebell Wood

I love this lot. Happy music to make you dance and drink. The Newcastle music scene is obviously doing well.
