Newcastle alt. pop four-piece Street Party In Soho have been gathering a lot of momentum of late. With a slot at this year’s Evolution Emerging and a single release in the not too distant future, it’s all looking good for the young band.

Within the last two years, the band have embarked on shows around the UK and played a slot at Brighton’s industry showcase The Great Escape, alongside the likes of Bastille and The 1975. Their debut single Take Your Time gained XFM’s single of the week, airplay on BAFTA Award winning hit reality TV show Made In Chelsea and recognition from NME. It’s no wonder they have generated a fair bit of attention.

“Our sound could be described as having a water fight but with honey; it’s sweet but tricky to get rid of.”

Their new single 17 was initially released back in 2014, but they decided to go back into the studio with Mike Smith from Polarsets to re-record the song. Lead singer Ryan Young describes the band’s sound: “We’d describe the music as afro-pop, it’s melodic and we try to make sure our individual pieces compliment each other throughout our songs. Our sound could be described as having a water fight but with honey; it’s sweet but tricky to get rid of.”

The band’s disparate influences have helped to inform their style: “We are all into our own style of music. We are big fans of White Lies, Polarsets and Humanism, but when it comes to actual influences, Jackson, our guitarist likes heavier stuff. Some of us like electronic music and Nathan our drummer likes indie…so we kind of bring it all together into what we do.”

The band will be playing Evolution Emerging at Retreat @ St Dominics alongside Hazels, Sun Dance, Shoot The Poet and Keep Breathing, and Ryan has high hopes for the band’s slot: “We’re really excited about it. We’ve tried to get on Evolution Emerging for the last couple of years now and this is the first time we’ve actually been put on quite high on the bill.”

Despite this only being part of a handful of gigs they have booked this summer, the band intend on keeping busy by releasing a special remixes version of new single 17. “We have remixes from Rossi Noise, Dom Zilla and Big Beat Bronson DJ LKP. Newcastle has a close community of musicians and bands and we wanted to get other bands’ takes on the track. The results are epic and we’re really grateful to those involved. It adds another element to 17 as a track now and they will end up being released as a separate EP.”

Street Party In Soho will play Retreat @ St Dominics as part of Evolution Emerging on Saturday 23rd May. The band release 17 in early June.
