“I do loads because I’ve always been a workaholic and I’ve got ADD so I have to have too many plates spinning, else I get bored.” To say Kiri Pritchard-McLean is one busy lady right now is an understatement. She is currently touring with her intensely personal show Victim, Complex which explores themes of gaslighting and the breakdown of relationships, as she explains. “On stage is the only place I felt like I could take ownership of it. It has been cathartic but, after having a break from the show and going back to it, I’m realising how emotive the show is for me.”

Pritchard-McLean isn’t one to shy away from tricky topics when it comes to her stand-up; 2017 saw her tour with Appropriate Adult, a show about voluntary work with vulnerable children, and providing further proof that she can find humour and heart in a multitude of subjects. “I think you can find the funny in anything – you just always make sure any ‘victims’ in the jokes aren’t the actual victims. I always try and pick something I don’t think people are talking about in comedy and make that funny, that’s the challenge really. When you get to the point you think you’re pulling it off it’s great!” And pulling it off she is, earning four and five star reviews for her current show. She also writes for sketch troupe Gein’s Family Giftshop, hosts Amusical with Jayde Adams which sandwiches together comedians and musicals, as well as Radio 4’s Newsjack and the hugely successful serial killer podcast All Killa No Filla with Rachel Fairburn, which they took to America in 2018 to do a series of live shows. “The live shows are so so fun. We’re looking at touring June onwards in the UK, I’d love to go to Australia too but these visas aren’t cheap!”

Kiri Pritchard-Mclean’s joy at doing her “dream job” is infectious; commanding the stage in her trademark sequined outfits and baring her soul to the audience with warmth, razor-sharp wit and mirth, her star is deservedly on the rise.

Kiri Pritchard-McLean brings Victim, Complex to The Stand, Newcastle on Tuesday 30th April.
