Teesside post-punk indie outfit, Cellar Door, silence scenester whispers of their demise by dropping a brand new single, Sirens, their first release since 2017. The track is a brooding, breakneck blast of big beats, screaming guitars and impassioned pleas but is it the beginning of a new chapter or their last dance? We speak to the band and find out more…

Where did you go? What have you been up to and why did you pick now to make a comeback?
I’d love to give some interesting accounts of our time offline, like Liam being kidnapped by a harem but it was as simple as life getting in the way. We’ve always taken our time and not been afraid to put the work into each song we write, we’ve been ticking over but not had anything that’s been worth us putting out there. During lockdown we got talking about a release and thought now would be a good time to go for it, cheer everyone up with some lovely dark alternative music. We’d already recorded Sirens in 2017 and had been waiting for an excuse to do something with it.

Tell us more about your latest single, Sirens. What’s it about?
Probably our darkest and dingiest single so far Sirens is a seedy story. It’s heavily influenced by a friend of mine who got mugged by a stripper, he was fine in the end and we all got a story from it. Following on from Warpaint we wanted to do something special with the track, we recorded it at Blast in Newcastle, produced by Dean Thompson (Sam Fender.) Dean has such a good ear for all the little tweaks that make a live track into a full-on record, we wanted a video that would do justice to Dean’s work.

How was it recorded? It was produced by Dean Thompson, what was it like working with him?
We’ve worked with Dean Thompson at Blast previously and knew what he was like to work with. Sirens to us seemed complicated with various parts and speeds but Dean breaks it all down and seems to see the song in its parts. Before recording the vocals he darted out the control room and started building a small fort out of furniture in the vocal booth, everything was very precisely placed, when we asked if this was for the sound quality he just looked confused, it’s was simply to make our singer feel important so he sang his little heart out. 

What’s the video that accompanies the single about and how does it tie in with the track?
We were lucky enough to get John Kirkbride (Weird Shapes, Cattle & Cane) to produce videos for us in the past and he’s a bit of a hidden gem. Our guitarist Joe Kovacs dreamt up narrative and sent it to John. John got to work making steady cams from roller skates and adapting his house, a few days later our Sirens release was complete. The video follows the themes of the song, sleaze and uncomfortable.  

What’s next for Cellar Door? 
We don’t know if this is the start of a glorious return for Cellar Door or just one last mark on the musical map, but I’d like to think there’s plenty left in us yet.
