Reliably informed

Newcastle-based solo artist Spider Noises, aka Jack Calvesbert, releases his new album this week. Described as a blend of ‘psych and anti-folk with a dash of glam’, Deconstructed House Cat is a cohesive and evocative release which was recorded in lockdown. Here, Jack tells us more about his music…

Who are you?

I’m Jack, aka Spider Noises.

What is it you do?

I’m a songwriter and maker of music. I make trippy, folksy tunes by multi-tracking in my bedroom like a budget Tame Impala or expensive Mac DeMarco.

How long have you been doing it for?

I’ve been writing songs since I was about 14, putting lyrics to the music in my head before I could play an instrument. My meteoric rise to success happened early when I performed an original song in a school talent show. Other kids used to shout the lyrics at me when I walked past. I remember thinking I’d peaked. My new album is a mission to prove I’m not a one-hit wonder.

What inspires you?

Pretty much any art that’s made with a carefree attitude. I’ve always gravitated towards music with a whimsical and fun nature, possibly because I’m anxious and uptight in real life. But inspiration can come from just about anything. I once saw a slug that had dried up in the sun and was compelled to write a song from its POV. Naturally, a lot of my new album was inspired by isolation. And fear.

Tell us about your music

It’s a mixture of obscure pop and lo-fi psychedelia. Lots of acoustic guitars disguised as electric guitars and Tupperware containers disguised as drums. It’s a bit too modern-sounding to be from the 60s and a bit too old-sounding to be current, so logically my music takes place somewhere in the 90s.

What have you got coming up?

My first full length album, Deconstructed House Cat, is dropping on Friday 26th June via Kitchen Practice Records and will be available to stream everywhere.
