Who are you?
My name is Jonny Godwin and I am a singer-songwriter from Thornaby.

What is it you do?
I play acoustic guitar and write and sing heartfelt acoustic songs.

How long have you been doing it for?
I’m not from a musical family but I have been fortunate that my Dad has good taste in music so I grew up on a diet of Paul Simon, Van Morrison, Fleetwood Mac amongst many others. So I knew from a young age what good music sounds like. I have loved music all my life and wrote melodies and lyrics from as young as I can remember. I was the lead singer of a former Teesside band Randy and The Handstand Band with my best mates but I didn’t play guitar at the time. We wrote and played indie rock tunes (quite different to my current genre haha). During this time I picked a guitar up and really worked hard to be able to play as it was always a dream of mine. I started writing songs inspired by my main music influences and eventually started to begin the very daunting process of gigging just me and my acoustic guitar.

What inspires you?
I often joke during my set how my songs are depressing but I have always written about things that have affected me directly or about an indirect story which I think could make a good song. Music in its most powerful form touches the soul and I think that in that medium it is also in its most beautiful form. So I always try to write from the heart as I have found if it means something to me then that will come across in my performances.

Tell us about your music.
It has been described before as ‘ethereal folk’ which I like. I think it’s very raw and stripped back as it’s just my vocals and acoustic guitar with an added touch of emotion. I’m influenced by my favourite acts such as Villagers, James Vincent McMorrow, Dermot Kennedy, Nathaniel Rateliff amongst others, so I think fans of these acts will enjoy my music.

What have you got coming up?
I have just released my second single, Numb, which I recorded with Rob Irish. It was written about being so disillusioned with relationships and love that you feel numb and unable to feel. It was a song written a number of years ago but has finally made its way to a release.

Within the current climate, all my upcoming shows have been unfortunately cancelled. I’m hoping to get some live garden sessions recorded to put out during quarantine. I also want to use this time to write as much as possible.
