Seminal avant-garde composer Arthur Russell isn’t a name that’s familiar to many, but it really should be. There’s a chance to get to know more of this experimental musician though, with a documentary screening about him at Pop Recs Ltd in Sunderland on Saturday 25th June.

Wild Combination is director Matt Wolf’s visually absorbing portrait of the talented artist saddled between experimentalism, country, folk, pop and disco. His parents, friends and colleagues such as Allen Ginsberg and Philip Glass, his long-time companion Tom Lee, and others provide contributions and their thoughts on Russell.

After the showing of the film local musician and all round super talented in his own right Rhys Patterson, will perform a selection of Russell’s work and bring to life music of the best avant-garde cellist, country singer and disco queen the world has ever seen. Okay, he may be the only one, which just makes it all the more special.
