Reliably informed

Over the past twelve months, our magazine and website have been brimming with super-talented, creative souls. We asked a few of them to tell us about their year. Next up, Newcastle’s iconic alt-folk/art-rock artist, Richard Dawson gives us the lowdown on his 2019.

So, how was your 2019?
It was full of music, lots of time in the studio, quite anti-social. A lot of quiet time. The world out there is a bit much most days, so quiet is good.

What was your best moment?
Playing onstage with one of my all-time favourite bands Circle in Helsinki hockey arena was a dream come true.

And your worst moment?
After a year and a half of appeals and the associated worry/stress/anxiety, I finally got to take it to a tribunal seeking to overturn an initial decision to stop my disability living allowance (which had previously been a lifetime award, for visual impairment). I was successful, so that would also count as a ‘best’ moment.

Your favourite band/artist of the year?
Easy – HANNAH DIAMOND!

Your favourite song of the year?
Any Hannah Diamond song! I really liked this song of the Big Thief album, ‘replaced’, very nice.

Favourite TV show of the year?
Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK… Cheryl Hole was robbed of third place, though!

Your favourite film?
Really enjoyed The Irishman, very haunting. Saw You Were Never Really Here a few weeks ago, I liked that.

Best book you read?
Drive Your Plough Over The Bones Of The Dead by Olga Tokarczuk is fabulous.

Favourite venue of the year?
I played a show in a magic supplies store in Rotherham called Grimm and co. The audience all had to enter via a secret door hidden in a bookshelf, and leave one by one down a beanstalk slide.

What was your favourite gig/show of the year?
I’ve hardly been out to be honest, so not much to draw on…. we went to see Pharaoh Overlord in manchester supporting Sleep. They were awesome. Was Sun Ra Arkestra at the Sage this year or the one before. Well, that was amazing.

Any upcoming artists we should keep an eye out for in 2020?
The Silver Field, The Aleph, Andy Abbott

And finally, what has next year got in store for you?
First half is a lot of travel and gigs, second half I’d like to get down to THE NEXT THING…
