There’s some of the very best in alternative comedy to kick off the week courtesy of The Stand’s Good Grief night. Seymour Mace and Ed Aczel both preview their new shows, and it’s a chance to see two of the most inventive acts around. Not a bad Monday at all.

Tuesday 11th July
MUSIC Kevin Devine @ Surf Cafe, Tynemouth
With a career spanning over fifteen years, Kevin Devine is one of those artists that inspires devotion and feverish loyalty amongst his supporters but remains relatively unknown outside of that fan base, and this intimate venue is the perfect gig to showcase this talent.

Wednesday 12th July
MUSIC Mercury Rev & The Royal Northern Sinfonia @ Sage Gateshead
Mercury Rev are famous for their wavelike sweeping orchestral pieces, and having worked with Annie Tilberg and her Conservatorium Orchestra, they have form for this kind of show. Just the thought of the Royal Northern Sinfonia with the unique vocals of Jonathon Donahue brings a shiver to the spine. Read Joe Fowler’s full preview here.

Thursday 13th July
COMEDY Mr Shindig’s Laughter Store @ Cumberland Arms, Newcastle
Another stellar line-up of comedy as Lee Kyle, John Whale, Sammy Dobson and Anja Atkinson join the joyously fun hosts Joby Mageean and Hal Branson for a top night of laughs.

Friday 14th July
ART & LIT The Illusionary Reality @ Abject Gallery
For Chinese artist Shiquan Zou – Breeze Creatives’ latest international find – the theme of epic journeys is central to his artistic expression. In his latest exhibition, The Illusionary Reality, this self-proclaimed ‘photorealistic’ painter endeavours to portray two wildly polarised worlds: the East and the West.

Saturday 15th July
COMEDY Edinburgh Fest Preview @ Witham Arts Centre, Barnard Castle
An evening packed with four full one hour Edinburgh Preview shows from four of the top comedians performing at this year’s festival including Hal Cruttenden, Jan Ravens, Howard Read and Joseph Morpurgo.

Sunday 16th July
FILM Jurassic Park @ Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle
Jurassic Park is a spectacle of special effects and life-like animatronics, with some of Spielberg’s best sequences of sustained awe and sheer terror since Jaws. It still to this day remains one of the greatest blockbuster movies of all time.
