Contemporary art collective UNIT 44 will take over St Nicholas Cathedral for The Late Shows

Stuck for something to do in the next seven days? We aim to have you covered with an event a day for the next week, all across the region. This time around we have surreal comedy, thrilling flicks and a night of non-stop culture.

Monday 9th May
MUSIC Fire Lady Luck @ Head of Steam, Newcastle
A night of alt. punk fun at Head of Steam, as Sunderland’s Fire Lady Luck head up a bill which also includes pop punkers Alterverse and melodic rockers The Rez.

Tuesday 10th May
COMEDY James Meehan & Harriet Dyer @ The Stand, Newcastle
The Stand continue their Edinburgh Fringe previews, with a double bill featuring the nonchalant wit of James Meehan and the surreal comedy of Harriet Dyer.

Wednesday 11th May
STAGE Fertile Ground: Dancing The Road @ Sunderland College
Dancing The Road is a triple bill of ensemble works that push the company into different ways of dancing and performing. Each work explores a different theme creating an exciting, unusual and accessible production that offers something for every-one.

Thursday 12th May
STAGE Lists for the End of the World @ ARC, Stockton
What would life look like if it were broken down into a series of lists? Bucket lists, to do lists, lists of lost loves and found friends, lists of things said and not said, of things inherited from parents and of things we’re still looking for. Remade for each new location using material contributed by people who live locally, it is an experiment in co-creation; a show in which the the ordinary and the extraordinary, the profound and the ridiculous sit playfully side by side.

Friday 13th May
FILM Green Room @ Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle
Part of Screenage Kicks’ Screen Demons horror festival. An amazingly crafted thriller which sees Patrick Stewart as a diabolical white supremacist club owner who squares off against an unsuspecting but resilient young punk band.

Saturday 14th May
EVENTS The Late Shows @ Various Venues, Newcastle & Gateshead
The late night culture crawl takes over the city centre, with a multitude of events that will bring cultural spaces to life. Our favourite picks include a curious-sounding ‘adults only’ event at Great North Museum: Hancock, an immersive installation from video artist Gareth Hudson and sound artist Toby Thirling at St Thomas The Martyr Church and UNIT 44’s exhibition at St Nicholas’ Cathedral.

Sunday 15th May
ART & LIT Alice In Wonderland @ Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle
A British Library exhibition with additional loans from the Victoria & Albert Museum especially for the Laing, Alice in Wonderland delves into the world of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Exploring the different ways generations of illustrators, artists, musicians, filmmakers and designers over the past 150 years have been inspired by the story of the girl who went ‘down the rabbit hole’.
