Reliably informed

Alongside our pals at Tees Music Alliance we’ve hatched some plans to offer a series of free and informal masterclasses for independent musicians, providing an opportunity to learn new skills and get advice from real experts in their fields.

Paul Burns from TMA explains. “NARC., like ourselves, care deeply about grassroots and emerging talent and we are delighted that the outcome of this collaboration can offer valuable guidance to those who just want to get out there, with or without the help of the industry.”

The free and impartial events will take place from 6.30pm every Tuesday in October in the Georgian Theatre bar (after TMA’s already popular drop-in sessions, which run 5pm-6pm).

On Tuesday 1st we’ll be talking about the live aspects of being a musician, from getting gigs to putting on DIY shows. Guests include DIY musician Ste Bardgett (Mouses), Teesside gig collective Sad For Life and festival and event organiser Sarah Wilson, plus NARC. web editor and Tees Music Alliance’s David Saunders and NARC. editor Claire will be on hand to talk about our experiences in the live music sector. On Tuesday 8th, Clue Records label boss Scott Lewis joins Durham’s head honcho of Sapien Records, David Smith, and DIY musician Danni Johnson to talk about their experiences releasing music on labels and by themselves. Tuesday 15th sees videographer Jay Dawson, photographer David Wala and photographer/graphic designer Rob Irish get together for a chat about making music videos, creating eye-catching promo photos and the importance of a great image. Tuesday 22nd will see Claire and David sharing our pearls of editorial wisdom when it comes to approaching press, plus social media expert Henry Carden and radio presenter Alex Burgess will talk about practical promotion and getting airplay.

We’ll also be hosting a special writing masterclass on Tuesday 29th, perfect for those looking to expand their creative writing skills and get involved with the magazine. David and Claire will be joined by fellow NARC. writers Linsey Teggert and Johnathan Ramsey, who also have experience writing for national publications and blogs.

Tues-DIY takes place in Stockton’s Georgian Theatre bar every Tuesday in October from 6.30pm-8pm
