The Northern Design Festival is set to return to the region between Wednesday 21st until Sunday 25th October, with a visual plethora of graphic design, architecture, furniture, lighting, fashion, fabrics and ceramics to please the artist in us all. Celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, the event will be taking place at The Assembly House, a magnificent Grade II listed building which will be opening to the public as a one-off for the festival. For those who thrive on perfectly curated interior spaces there will be plenty to engage and inspire, including Newcastle-based designer David Irwin’s installation, showing fifty of his M Lamps available through The Conran Shop, as well as the likes of NODE, who will be displaying a range of rugs by leading designers and illustrators.

For those interested in that of an architectural nature, the Architecture Open will show a range of work seen in the RIBA design competition; while Deadgood will be putting on an Architect’s Breakfast event as well as displaying products at the festival.

Another highlight is the opportunity to experience the work of new design talent through Northumbria University School of Design who will be displaying Tools For Everyday Life, demonstrating design collaboration between students and staff.

The content of the festival will also be picked over and illuminated within a series of talks throughout the week that seek to describe and contextualize the visual, including talks from William Russell, a partner at Pentagram, and Chris Haughton at NODE.

If you want to get your hands on special one-off pieces, the Design Event MART is for you. With a range of exhibitors and displayed pieces available for sale, the MART demonstrates the range of skilled design available at our very fingertips from across the region. All exhibitors are chosen on design merit by a panel of experts, with work selected to appear by Novocastrian, whose work is rooted in the region’s industrial heritage; Nick James’s unique and intelligently designed furniture; and the dramatic soft furnishings of Sophie Thompson.

The beauty of design proves itself entirely attainable at pop-up shop Design Event Store too, where visitors can purchase beautifully designed objects and prints at affordable prices.

The Northern Design Festival has year after year, brought together an amalgamation of talent in a way that allows us to enjoy design and innovation on a whole new level.
