Reliably informed

Are you stuck in with that ‘what shall we do this weekend’ conundrum? We’re going to offer you up weekend destinations filled with the best quirky happenings, both in and out of the region. Next up, we’ll take you on a little trip around Bishop Auckland…

SHOP The Pod
There’s a thriving arts and crafts scene in the County Durham town, with key movers and shakers including Gillian Arnold’s fine art and the stunning work put out by Fat Panda Tattoo Studio. Also of note are art gallery and shop The Pod, which specialises in selling and displaying work by local artists.

STAGE Bishop Auckland Town Hall
Boasting that every possible strand of the arts is represented in their comprehensive arts programme, Bishop Auckland Town Hall hosts a gallery, theatre, library and café. A hub for music, literature, theatre, dance, visual arts and crafts, there’s also special programming for families and those with special needs.

HERITAGE Auckland Castle
Thanks to philanthropist millionaire Jonathan Ruffer’s £15 million investment in neo-Gothic pile Auckland Castle, the historic building is the town’s crowning glory. Have a wander around the extensive grounds and deer park, view one of their regular exhibitions or take part in a workshop. Regular food events and concerts are the cherry on the cake.

FOOD Toronto Lodge
A Sonnet 43 brewery tap, Toronto Lodge has fresh local fare at the heart of its menu. They pride themselves on award-winning craft ales from Sonnet 43, as well as artisan gins and vodka from Sunderland’s Poetic Licence small batch distillery. A boutique hotel will be a welcome 2016 addition.

SOMETHING TO DO Kynren
Kynren is frankly a huge deal – an open air performance spectacular telling the epic tale of England runs every Saturday between July and September.
