Reliably informed

Ahead of performing as part of New Year New Artists at Sage Gateshead on Saturday 27th January, much lauded singer-songwriter Mali Hayes joins us for a new Bunch Of Fives, and reveals her top five lifestyle choices.

Meditation
I’ve absolutely loved exploring what works for me in terms of meditation and discovering new apps that help me on my journey. The key is to do what works for you! Try five minutes of only focusing on your breath with your eyes closed. Then build it up. Download the app called Insight Timer and listen to some of their guided meditations. Find music that relaxes you. We can all make it work and feel the benefits from it!

Yoga
Similar to meditation, I do ten minutes every morning (more if I feel like it) and I feel so much more energised, ready for my day, awake, alert and prepared. Being in tune with your body and knowing what’s maybe not as you want it to be, and discovering how to help that place is such a wonderful thing. We can help heal ourselves!

Journaling
I think it’s so so important to release your feelings in some way or another. If you don’t have anyone you can truly talk to, about everything that’s going on in your world, write it down. Get it all out. Don’t hold back. Then evaluate it. Question yourself and why you feel a certain way. Again, we can help heal ourselves – how amazing is that!

Me Time
I used to detest being alone. Even when growing up, I’d get home from school and ask mum if anyone was coming over tonight. I just loved to be in people’s company. As I’ve grown older and I’ve been forced to grow my independence, I’ve grown to know what I like and what I don’t.
One thing I absolutely love now is alone time. Creating a space where I feel absolute comfort – I light incense, candles, my oil diffuser (thanks Santa), I grab a mug of my favourite tea, I sometimes journal, I sometimes read or even watch inspirational videos on YouTube.
I adore this time to myself!

Diet
I love eating foods that make me feel good. I of course treat myself the I feel it’s needed (’cause your girl really does love her chocolate), but there’s nothing better than all of the above, on top of eating what your body deserves. I’ve been veggie for a year and a half and I have no plans to look back. Vegan is a goal of mine, but I’m taking my time to slowly transition to a lifestyle I believe is appropriate.
