Ahead of her appearance at BANG! Fest at The Stand, Newcastle on Saturday 25th August, we caught up with DJ Lady Annabella Marczewska of Jesmond. (You can also find her on Instagram here). Having started out as a go-go dancer with the band Women in Revolt, her interesting career has lead to DJing and having a radio show called Hot Lava on (now defunct) basic.fm. Here, we find out a little bit more..

So, tell us a bit about yourself and what you do?
I’m Annabella Marczewska or Lady Annabella Marczewska of Jesmond if you will…
I’m a DJ/selector playing an eclectic mix of tunes in many bars in Newcastle. I love collecting vintage clothing, occasional go-go dancing, trashy TV, wine and jigsaws.

What’s the first record you ever bought?
Probably something by Madonna. There used to be a record shop round the corner from where I lived as a kid and I remember saving up money to buy anything they got in by Madonna. As a teen the CD I ever bought and loved as an album was Check Your Head by the Beastie Boys.

What’s your guilty pleasure musically?
I have too many and I find the concept of ‘guilty pleasure’ so interesting, like what one person considers ‘cheesy’ and all that. It’s down to taste. I likely do various people’s heads in on a regular basis with my musical choice which most of the time is really good but is sprinkled with guilty pleasures…
My current one is Nelly Hot in Herre, I admit I have two New Kids on the Block songs on my iPod which I’m quite partial to and I love Rock and Roll Part 2 by Gary Glitter.

Favourite film of all time?
That would be Desperately Seeking Susan.

Your guilty pleasure film?
All the films I love are guilty pleasures! Currently, Purple Rain. I’m not guilty though!

If you could recommend one TV series to binge watch, what would it be?
I’m always highly recommending Prisoner Cell Block H to anyone that will listen but folk want modern shit on Netflix and stuff don’t they? Like, actual ‘good’ TV.
Prisoner has a bad reputation but I love it, it is camp and soapy and gripping at the same time. Plus, there are 692 episodes so it’s reeeally long which is great when you’re feeding an addiction.

Your favourite book?
I’m terrible with books, not an avid reader. I like memoirs and coffee table books with pictures. A friend (who was probably worried for me) sent me a copy of The Secret History by Donna Tartt which I did really enjoy.

Who or what makes you laugh the most?
A lot of people I love really make me laugh which is good as I love to laugh. Laughing with my grandma is the best, we can get quite hysterical over nothing that funny at all.

Who or what makes you sad?
Trying to think of an answer to this question.

If you had super power, what would it be?
The ability to vanquish hangovers.

And finally, you get to play a board game with any three famous people from history, who do you choose and what’s the board game?
Connect Four with Andy Warhol, Scrabble with Oliver Reed and Twister with Prince.
