Ahead of their show at Jumpin’ Jacks in Newcastle on Saturday 21st April, we caught up with folk punkers Black Water County to find out a little bit more about what they do. First up, it’s Tim…

TIM 

Who are you and what do you do?  
I’m Tim, I’m the bassist and lead singer.  

What’s the first record you ever bought?  
The first record I remember buying was an Iron Maiden Best Of compilation. It still gets regular playtime in the car.  

What’s your guilty pleasure musically?  
It’s not so much a guilty pleasure, but every time I hear someone playing a ska tune I am physically incapable of stopping myself from skanking around like a proper twit.  

Favourite film of all time?  
The Big Lebowski- I came for The Dude, and I stayed for the tunes.  

Your guilty pleasure film?
Aeroplane! I’m a sucker for puns.  

If you could recommend one TV series to binge watch, what would it be?  
Letterkenny. You’ll thank me later.  

Your favourite book?  
American Gods by Neil Gaiman; a great balance of gripping plot and twisted humour.  

Who or what makes you laugh the most?  
I usually find myself cackling hysterically at puns that other people groan at… Usually it’s me that’s said them. I keep myself entertained.  

Who or what makes you sad?  
Music venues closing down!  

If you had super power, what would it be?  
Teleportation would be pretty neat… Alternatively, actually being able to play the bass well would be a close second.  

And finally, you get to play a board game with any three famous people from history, who do you choose and what’s the board game?  
Shane McGowan for the stories, Arthur Guinness for the drinks, and Billy Connelly for the jokes. I’d have to go for Monopoly just so that I get to spend a decent amount of time with them, although I don’t fancy falling out with Shane over it… 

SHAN 

Who are you and what do you do? 
I’m Shannon, I sing a few tunes, play some tin whistle and eat hummus.   

What’s the first record you ever bought? 
Avril Lavigne – Let Go   

What’s your guilty pleasure musically? 
A cheeky bit of Dubstep   

Favourite film of all time? 
Pulp Fiction – classic   

Your guilty pleasure film? 
Elf, I try to get the rest of the band to watch it every year. 

If you could recommend one TV series to binge watch, what would it be? 
Black Mirror or Hannibal.  

Your favourite book? 
George Orwells 1984, or Ready Player One, can’t choose. 

Who or what makes you laugh the most? 
Anyone in the band falling over 

Who or what makes you sad? 
Watching the end bit of Blue Planet when David Attenborough explains how much humans have f’d up the world   

If you had super power, what would it be? 
Bring able to morph into animals, got everything from wings to gills at my disposal.   

And finally, you get to play a board game with any three famous people from history, who do you choose and what’s the board game? 
Ella Fitzgerald, Frida Kahlo, Audrey Hepburn and we’d play scrabble over a few bottles of wine! 

BRAD 

Who are you and what do you do?  
Brad – Electric Guitar 

What’s the first record you ever bought?  
Green Day – American Idiot 

What’s your guilty pleasure musically? 
I’m not even ashamed to admit I love S Club 7.

Favourite film of all time? 
I think between us we could quote the entirety of School of Rock, so I’d have to go with that. 

Your guilty pleasure film? 
I’ve seen High School Musical more times than I care to admit.  

If you could recommend one TV series to binge watch, what would it be? 
Sons of Anarchy for sure. 

Your favourite book? 
Birdsong – Sebastian Faulks 

Who or what makes you laugh the most? 
Fail videos are what keeps me going day to day, so I guess… other peoples misfortune… haha 

Who or what makes you sad? 
Going back to work after festival season. 

If you had super power, what would it be? 
The ability to function on a hangover would be fantastic. 

And finally, you get to play a board game with any three famous people from history, who do you choose and what’s the board game? 
Ok so here’s the scene… There’s me, Elvis, Marilyn Monroe and Johnny Cash sat around a table sipping whiskey, smoking cigars and playing Cluedo. Ideal.  

JOSH 

Who are you and what do you do? 
Josh- Music teacher by day and Drummer by night!

Trivium- still a teenage metal head at heart!!

Apparition (the ability to teleport) so I don’t have to spend hours in a van 😉

Who are you and what do you do?  
I’m Gav and I play the diddlematic banjo.  

What’s the first record you ever bought?  
Sum 41 – All Killer No Filler.  

What’s your guilty pleasure musically?  
Scissor Sisters.  

Favourite film of all time?  
The Italian Job (the original, before Michael Caine was replaced with an american imposter).  

Your guilty pleasure film?  
The Italian Job (the american imposters version, I actually quite like it…).  

If you could recommend one TV series to binge watch, what would it be?  
Black Books.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

Bill Bailey.

Mornings.

The ability to conjure pizza and beer at will.

RUSS 

Who are you and what do you do?  
Russ, Fiddle and Guitar, Teacher by day!

What’s your guilty pleasure musically?  
Katy Perry, thanks to Max Martin  

Favourite film of all time?  
The Mask, I don’t care what people think about Jim Carrey, he’ll always be my favourite

The Devil Wears Prada? I’ve accidentally watched it way too many times  

If you could recommend one TV series to binge watch, what would it be?  
Utopia – Watch it on All 4, it’s contagiously creepy!  

Your favourite book?  
1984 – George Orwell, continuing with the dystopian theme

Puns! Lots of them

Food-waste, waste in general…

Flying! No doubt about it
