This January awards season returns to the big screen, and Newcastle’s Tyneside Cinema will be the place to see all of the nominees. Highlights include Joe Wright’s inspiring Winston Churchill drama Darkest Hour, featuring a stunning lead performance from Gary Oldman, Steven Spielberg’s highly-anticipated historical drama The Post, starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, and Martin McDonagh’s hotly-tipped Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri which stars Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell.

From February on the first Thursday of every month, Newcastle’s Cobalt Studios present a series of films by or about artists, exploring their creative process. Wood fired pizza, popcorn and beanbags make it a no-brainer. You can also enjoy a regular film night at Gosforth Civic Theatre, with free films screened on the third week of every month.

The inaugural Newcastle Film Festival (29/3-1/4) promises all manner of genres from around the world across the city, more info TBC.

Much-loved indie cinema Star & Shadow are tentatively scheduling an April reopening, but they still need help from volunteers. Get stuck in and offer your help by emailing info@starandshadow.org.uk
