Ahead of the screening of documentary A Fat Wreck – The Punk-U-Mentary, at Trillians in Newcastle on Wednesday 5th October, (a show which also features a live gig filled with angsty pop punk from local lads Bares) we thought we’d recommend five favourites that have graced this influential label over the last 25 years. Ladies and gents, let’s celebrate the awesome punk rock Fat Wreck Chords has to offer.
The band of Fat Wreck co-founder Fat Mike, ( founded with his now ex-wife Erin Kelly-Burkett) are filled with fun and often intensely sharp and intelligent lyrics, backed by blistering pop punk melodies.
Political, powerful, and quite simply one of the best punk rock bands of recent times.
Me First And The Gimme Gimmes
Something of a punk rock supergroup, featuring members of Lagwagon, Foo Fighters and again, Fat Mike, they perform exclusively cover songs across various themed albums, and all are an utter joy.
An underrated favourite, with a back catalogue of brilliance, one you simply need to listen to.
The Canadian rockers had edged towards a heavier sound on later releases, but the output through Fat Wreck stands the test of time of some of the most vital listens the label ever put out.
