South Shields’ own Brooke Bentham is releasing her debut EP The Room Swayed next month and marking release with a one off headline show at the Surf Club in Tynemouth on Saturday 17th June. Before that though, she found time to tell us her top five songs, so over to you Brooke…

I actually can’t pick a top five but here are SOME of the top songs ever.

Bob Dylan – Stuck Inside a Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again
OMG. this song. I’m in the car with my Dad and we’re screaming it. Emphasising Dylan’s draggy voice. I’m surprised I haven’t caught that drag.

The Beatles – It’s Only Love
I picked this song but it’s only one of the best Beatles songs in the world, Eleanor Rigby, This Boy, Hide your Love Away. I probably know the words to every single Beatles song. I feel like everyone does but the Beatles have a real just sentimental attachment to them. It’s like this certain home feeling every time I listen to a song by them. If someone tells me they love them I find it weird when someone else likes them as much – Don’t they sing every song for me!!?? How can you get the same feeling ? Although they were quite sexist. Soz Beatles.

Mazzy Star – Fade Into You
An obvious Mazzy Star choice yes but it’s just so GOOD. The most wonderful moody ’90s swaying rock ever.

Mitski – I Don’t Smoke
I’ve listened to this song at least 4 days a week for the past 3 months. Her soft voice and that crunching bass and those punching drums. Such a good combo. So moody and so badass. Also her lyrics are so so good.

Tim Darcy – Still Waking Up
This was hard. Five songs goes by fast. I was going to have Carly Rae Jepsen – Run Away With Me or Radiohead – Glasseyes (yeah technically seven but I can’t do this) or ARCADE FIRE? Anyway, I saw Tim Darcy in February and I love this record. This song is like .. romance and it’s also a little bit funny. I don’t know if that’s because I watched the video with the song for the first time. It’s so bloody good though. I love Ought too (his other band). I love a lot of music. I shouldn’t have picked a top five songs.
