French Kiss Records
The opening song on a band’s debut record will often be read as a statement of intent. In Diet Cig’s case, it’s probably the most bang-on summing up of who they are that they’ll ever manage. Sixteen is one third plaintive angst and two thirds arse-kicking guitar shred, just like Swear I’m Good at This as a whole.
Link In Bio sees them bristling with rage at the injustices of the world like they’ve got this whole thing all figured out, while songs like Apricots are painfully vulnerable. The blend feels a lot like Waxahatchee, but Alex Luciano’s lyrics are way more direct than Katie Crutchfield’s. The result is absolutely life-affirming stuff which is positively teeming with youthful energy.
