On first impressions, there’s a pleasingly ethereal quality to Bashed Out that promises much. Unfortunately for This Is The Kit though, this lightness of touch actually turns out to be a lightness of substance.

Overall too many songs just melt into one, and lyrics like those on Magic Spell don’t help when they sound like they could have been hastily scribbled on a beermat across the road from the studio. There are bright spots though, with Nits, Spores All Settling and Misunderstanding all evoking Laura Marling in the best possible way, offering a sometimes frustrating glance at what could have been a great album if only it had a few more musical ideas to pin the songs on.
