At their best, The Lilac Time recall the most tender moments of The Beautiful South, stripped of the cynicism and irony, which kind of misses the point of that great band. At their worst, it’s very clear why Robbie Williams would enlist frontman Stephen Duffy’s songwriting talents. Not that there’s anything wrong with that specifically, but for every First Song of Spring or No Sad Songs, which are laden with pop sensibilities and lush arrangements, there’s a Wedding Song or Prussian Blue, which ruefully overdo it on the schmaltz. They’re described as an alternative folk band, but it’s hard to see what’s alternative about it. This is as mainstream as it gets. Not one for the cynics.
