The UK-based Indianapolis native Jeremy Radway might be a singer-songwriter, but he doesn’t want you to know that. It isn’t that his work under the name of Player Piano is an act of disguise, more that the leisurely yet ornate arrangements he favours on debut album Radio Love sound far more like the work of a locked-in band than a solo star plus secessionists.

It’s to the great benefit of his songs: tracks like Underground and Sleeping Silver Horses gain a great warmth from their rich FM radio sound. There’s detours into quasi-funk on Kings & Queens and arena pomp that justify the John Grant comparisons, but instead of Grant’s acid wit and confessionals, Radio Love thrives on a laid-back charm.
