Ex-pat Piney has been a mainstay of the London indie circuit for years, both solo and in any number of often very unusual combos. This new album, released on the redoubtable Damaged Goods, sees a further shift away from the country leanings of much of her earlier material towards a more quirky indie style. While lyrically there are hints of loss and darkness, most of this album sounds so effervescent and cheerful it’s a little bit like eating ALL THE HARIBO. Tracks like Universe keep things a little more grounded but over the course of 12 tracks, the album can be like a long afternoon with an endearing but irrepressible toddler; like Zooey Deschanel backed by a perma-grinning indie band.
