Retaining the atmospheric echoes and distinctive voice of Jonathan Donahue, but peppered with some more upbeat and jaunty numbers – like personal favourite Coming Up For Air – Mercury Rev’s new album is more than a little overdue.

Unafraid of using big orchestral arrangements and the full gamut of the studio, Mercury Rev have achieved an authentic sound which works well as a studio album, but could also be transposed to a live setting. A sense of expansion permeates throughout, with touches of funkiness, like the horn-filled Sunflower, with a hint of acid jazz a la Corduroy coming to the fore. Psychedelic, rocky, funky, reflective, fun and importantly, brilliant, I don’t have anything bad to say about this album. Seven years worth waiting.
