2012’s Big Inner was one of the great sleeper hits of recent years, offering a subtle blend of soul, gospel, country and psychedelic pop that slowly burrowed its way deep into the heart of the listener. After the (relatively) stripped back detour of the Outer Face EP, Fresh Blood finds Matthew E White doubling down on the opulent, seventies-derived arrangements brought to life by the talented musicians of the Spacebomb collective. More direct than his previous work, while Flesh Blood does lose some of the vivid strangeness of his previous collections, the strength of his songwriting makes for another compelling listen: the plaintive beauty of Holy Moly and the Philip Seymour Hoffman tribute Tranquillity in particular linger long in the memory.
