If you came to Los Campesinos! through sugar-rush tunes like My Year In Lists, the last two albums seemed a little dour and sluggish, so the good news is that Sick Scenes has an energy and spark many feared lost. Gareth’s lyrics – still equal parts relationship trauma, football references and mental health concerns – are as barbed and witty as ever, but some of the songs here are much stronger than of late.
Sad Suppers is a full-pelt delight and lead single and bona fide anthem I Broke Up In Amarante is as good as anything they’ve done since Romance Is Boring. The latter part of the album tails off somewhat but it’s good to see Los Campesinos! back to something like full strength.
