In comparison with their excellent debut, Write In is altogether less… weird. It’s fair to say that Happyness wear their influences on their sleeves, but if Weird Little Birthday was rooted in the traditions of US slacker rock from the 90s, Write In definitely injects more of a 70s vibe to their signature dream pop sound. Less Sparklehorse, more Byrds.
Opening track, Falling Down, is pretty much the ideal road trip music; the auditory equivalent of driving down an endless highway. The Reel Starts Again is a mix between Neil Young and The Beach Boys, swirly harmonies combined with jangly piano melodies. Write In might not be an attention grabber, but it’s definitely something you might find yourself falling for.
