Obaro Ejimiwe hasn’t ever followed a completely straightforward path. Over the course of two albums, he’s instead decided to tread across a range of genres in a laid-back style, lending his unique vocal delivery to a host of lyrically complex and illuminating narratives. Shedding Skin doesn’t deviate too much in terms of vocal delivery, it often veers wonderfully into weird and wonderful electronic territory. Sounding like the rightful heir to Tricky and Massive Attack’s trip-hop throne, songs like Yes I Helped You Pack and the title track are darkly menacing, while his guest vocalists, including Nadine Shah, Paul Smith and Lucy Rose, add beautiful touches of light and shade. It could well be the definitive British hip-hop album of the year.
