You’ll probably see the word ‘melodic’ chucked around quite liberally if you read much about Emerald Valley, but it’s undoubtedly the most appropriate adjective to describe Filthy Friends’ second record. It’s an elegant collection of country-tinged rock, delivered with consummate skill, which reaches an emotive peak on closer Hey Lacey.

It’s hard to shake the feeling, though, that a little more fire would make for a far more memorable album. Things don’t fully kick into gear until the latter stages with Last Chance County the most energetic moment, and it’s probably not a coincidence that this happens to be the song where Corin Tucker really lets loose with her peerless voice. Ah well, at least, at least Sleater-Kinney are back soon.
