A quarter of a century after making its debut on Earth 2, Dylan Carlson’s guitar remains one of the most beautifully toned and transformative sounds heavy music has to offer. Those anticipating a follow-up to Earth’s superb 2014 offering Primitive And Deadly will have to wait a little longer, but for now, at least, their ears can gorge upon Conquistador, the first LP the group’s leader has unveiled under his own name.

Indeed, for all that they lack a rhythm section, the five pieces here could scarcely feel more distinctive, with Carlson’s signature drones given virtual free reign across a self-described “imaginary western” soundscape. Settle in, check the neighbours aren’t home and ready the biggest, loudest speakers you own: this is vintage stuff.
