After the low-key triumph of their first collaboration, Everything’s Getting Older, it’s unsurprising but entirely welcome to find acclaimed pianist Bill Wells teaming up with Aidan Moffat for another album of intense, bleakly comic and sometimes unexpectedly beautiful ballads. It’s a more diverse collection than its predecessor, taking in slinky electro-pop and jubilant gospel choirs along the way, but the great highlights arrive when it’s Wells’ jazz background leading, placing Moffat’s trademark lyricism within startling new contexts like the smoky bossa nova of Vanilla or the jazz swing of Any Other Mirror. Throughout, Moffat conjures up a noir vision of Glasgow, depicting his urban muse as seductive, treacherous and enthralling all at once – much like this album itself.
